Sports coaching can be a fulfilling experience. Especially if you are working with youth players and you get a first hand view of how they develop into being great athletes. 

While many sports coaches work for sports organisations, a good percentage of them venture out on their own and start their own sports coaching business. 

One of the biggest struggles amongst sports coaches, is the ability to differentiate themselves from competitors. 

When I quiz the coaches that I speak to on a weekly basis on what makes them special? They tend to be emotional and give me answers like “I’ve been in the game for so long”, “It’s me, I am the difference”, etc etc. 

While there’s no wrong in what they are saying, we are talking about having a competitive edge over the rest in your space. 

The reason for that is because many sports coaches never even thought about productising their knowledge and expertise. They feel that it’s something very hard to do and that you must hire an expert to help you do that. In fact, I’m going to cover that in depth in this article and show you how easy it is. 

Writing down all your ideas
Just the thought of this exercise might be daunting to many. My aim here is to break it down play by play so that you can take all the information I”m providing here and start executing it yourself. 

Creating a clear pathway to success
When trying to productise your expertise, you must understand what are the results you will be giving your client in return for them paying you. 

Which is why, we get all our clients to go through The Perfect Offer training in order to understand who you serve and how you create a message around the results that you provide. 

We help create a very clear and well-structured PRODUCT that reflects your customer journey to achieve one specific desired result. 

When you get this right, you eliminate all competition by purely talking about your unique mechanism that produces results consistently when implemented by your clients. 

Your sports coaching service roadmap, we call the signature solution. 

The first step into productising your expertise starts with you organising your coaching ideas, techniques, systems content into obvious or natural categories. 

Write down everything that comes to mind. Don’t overthink it. Try not be perfect the first time. Just start. 

Once you have all of it written down, kill anything that isn’t absolutely ESSENTIAL and REQUIRED for achieving the specific desired result in your program. 

Think in stages, what stages of transformation do they have to go through to get to the results they want? 

It’s the centre of your entire business!

Here’s a snapshot of the Signature solution template that we give all our clients to help them productise their knowledge and expertise. 

Using the THE RULE OF THREE
The rule of three is a writing principle based on the idea that humans process information through pattern recognition. As the
the smallest number that allows us to recognise a pattern in a set, three can help us craft memorable phrases. 

The rule of three is also incredibly useful as a structural tool: comedians use the rule of three to craft three-part jokes (set up, build anticipation, punch line) and screenplays generally follow a three-act structure.

Here are some examples of the rule of three in common saying, 

Good, Better, Best
Stop, Look and Listen
Small, Medium, Large
Gold, Silver, Bronze
Signed, Sealed, Delivered

To further illustrate this, here are some examples when it comes to marketing and some of the biggest brands in the world have adopted the “Rule of Three”.

Just do it (Nike) 
Your flexible friend (Mastercard)
I’m lovin’ it (McDonalds) 
Finger licking’ good (KFC) 

In physics – Newton’s three laws of motion, in music – musical triads: the three-note building blocks of musical harmony. In religion – the concept of the triple deity, common throughout world mythology, such as the holy trinity. In art and photography – principles of composition, such as the rule of thirds…

Start with listing out the stages you expect your clients to go through.

So think about stages as major milestones in that journey to success. I’ve given you some examples in the image above. 

Once we sort of the stages, in each stage we look at the steps they need to take to get to the next level.

Almost like a video game where you clear one step at a time to get to the next stage. 

STEPS make up the main content of the Service Roadmap. Each STAGE contains three Steps. Each Step solves a small problem that supports the “Big Payoff” (Core Currency) that your product
delivers!

After steps comes action. ACTIONS are required to complete each step.

With a bank canvas, setting out with the stages and the steps, as I help sports coaches get to $20k in revenue in just 90days, so I needed to ensure that they are very clear about the stages they have to go through in order to get to the target revenue. I called my stages: 
1. The Foundation 
2. The Funnel 
3. The Floodgates.

Now once, I got that in place, I needed to outline the action steps.

And this is the final product after sending it to a graphic designer to create a killer one page signature solution.

Now, everything in my business centres around my Signature solution. From writing a blog post, videos, e-books, social media posts. What I am doing is creating more visibility for my Intellectual property.
